Splendid Palace is opening its cinema terrace with scandalous Ozone’s "Summer of 1985"

Starting from June 11, cinema devotees will have the opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of the Splendid Garden cinema terrace at 61 Elizabetes Street. This is not only a bright summer presentation, but also a step towards a greener and more citizen-friendly Riga. The new outdoor terrace, as the sun sets, will be opened with François Ozone's latest film, Summer of 1985, a love story between two teenage boys in the seaside town of Normandy.

The author of the Splendid Garden concept on the cinema terrace is the architect Signe Zihelmane. Tables where Rigans and guests of the city will enjoy summer cinema evenings have once played their role as decorations in such Latvian films as Melania's Chronicle, Emilija. Queen of the Latvian Press and others. The outstanding artists of Latvian cinema Ieva Jurjāne, Kristīne Jurjāne and Jurģis Krāsons have taken care of a special feeling.

“We decided to announce the cinema summer in Riga with the southern breath of the European film festival, highlighting the elegance of the city in the evening. Combining it with snacks and a glass of wine, such summer evenings can become a great tradition in Riga,” Ieva Sīpola, Manager of Splendid Palace, considers. Taking care of the health of terrace visitors, the organisers promise to observe all precautions and regulations in force in the country.

“François Ozone's film Summer of 1985 is a romantic story of first love and the search for identity. The reality in Ozone's films is probably a reflection of erotic fantasies,” Daira Āboliņa, Cinema's Artistic Director, reasons for the film to open the Splendid Palace cinema terrace. Last year, the film was included in the list of the Cannes Film Festival, but its premiere dazzled in Tallinn, within the Black Nights Film Festival. Daira Āboliņa promises that the terrace of Splendid Garden will show European cinema hits in the summer. In July, the Italian director Giovanni Troilo's “Frida. Viva la vida” is awaited, and in August the award-winning “Undine” by German director Christian Petzold.

You will be able to visit the Splendid Garden terrace almost every summer evening and follow the program on the website www.splendidpalace.lv. It will also be possible to reserve a table in advance. In case of bad weather, the showings will be postponed and ticket holders will be notified accordingly.
